Chiefly personal and business papers of Capt. John Gould (1801-1871), including bills; insurance and sales contracts for his schooners; and letters regarding their cargo; together with legal documents and other Gold and Gould family papers; correspondence, legal documents, photographs, reports, and clippings, relating to the Gould Homestead Summer Home for Women (1910-1967), established by the will of Elizabeth B. Gould (1825-1908) to provide a free vacation home to working women of Fairfield County, and the later establishment of a scholarship fund (1968-1977) for young women under the auspices of the Gould Foundation. Other persons represented include Col. Abraham Gold (1732-1777).

Nathan Gold (d. 1694) arrived in Fairfield in 1649 and soon figured prominently in town government. His descendants served as lieutenant governor and senator. Capt. John Gould (1801-1871), a Fairfield businessman, state official, and owner of a fleet of schooners trading between New York, Richmond, Va., and Liverpool, England, built the mansion known as the Gould Homestead, which later, under his daughter's will, provided a free vacation home to working women of Fairfield County.
