Alpheus W. Wilson papers, 1854-1916.

The collection consists of the papers of Alpheus W. Wilson, his wife and father from 1821 to 1916. Correspondence is between Wilson and his wife, Susan; Wilson with his daughter, Nina; and Susan Wilson's with Nina. Topics addressed in Wilson's letters include Baltimore during the Civil War (1861-1862); travel to East Asia, India, and Brazil; church concerns and church members; publishing house agents; slavery and the church; and the death of his wife. Photocopies are newsclippings about Wilson and the Methodist Church. The diary (1821-1858) was written by Wilson's father, Norval Wilson, and documents his activities as a circuit rider in the Baltimore, Maryland, and Winchester and Alexandria, Virginia, circuits. Certificates for ordination and a diploma were issued to Norval Wilson and to Alpheus Wilson; a sermon by Wilson is based on biblical text.

Alpheus Waters Wilson, Methodist bishop and author, was born 5 February 1834, in Baltimore, Maryland, and died there 21 November 1916. He was made secretary of the board of missions (1878); made bishop (1882); toured missions in East Asia (1886; 1890-1891; 1898-1900; 1907; Japan, Korea, China) and Brazil (1892-1903); and wrote many articles and books including MISSIONS and WITNESS TO CHRIST, a collection of lectures delivered at Vanderbilt University.
