Edith Sitwell - Pavel Tchelitchew correspondence, 1929-1957.

The papers consists primarily of letters between Sitwell and Tchelitchew, detailing their artistic pursuits and daily lives. The letters written by Tchelitchew span the years 1939-1957 (with a single letter dated 1930). Sitwell's letters span 1929-1951. Included with several of Sitwell's letters are drafts of poems by her. Also present are several other letters addressed to Tchelitchew (including letters from Geoffrey Gorer and from Robert de Saint Jean), a letter from Osbert Sitwell to Tchelitchew, and one from Edith Sitwell to Tchelitchew's sister, Alexandra Zaoussailoff, two loose manuscripts by Edith Sitwell, and a group of items found with the letters: a button; a photograph of an unidentified woman; and a sailor's pompon.

Russian-born painter, set designer, and costume designer, Pavel Tchelitchew emigrated in 1920. He lived in Berlin (1921-23) and Paris (1923-34) before moving to New York, where he lived with his partner Charles Henri Ford. He became a United States citizen in 1952 and died in Grottaferrata, Italy in 1957.
