Papers, 1807-1866.

The bulk of the collection is an extensive series of correspondence covering Ward's most creative years. These letters provide detailed information on his career as a painter and engraver. They include comments on his early career and reflections on his motivation, choice of subject matter, work habits and technique, together with some patrons' letters relating to specific commissions or works and occasional critical evaluations. Information is also furnished on Ward's circle, family and estate. The correspondence is complemented by the "Recollections" of his son, George Raphael, which provides commentary on Ward's career. The collection includes Ward's proposal for a national monument to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo, his own extensive description of the "Battle of Waterloo in an Allegory", seven pencil and chalk drawings, and the diary of a working trip taken in 1826. Also included are some biographical materials and a short series of documents relating to George Raphael Ward.
