George Robert Swain photographs and papers, 1870-1947 (bulk 1913-1947).

The Swain collection is comprised of three series: Miscellaneous Papers, Photographs: Prints, and Photographs: Negatives. The bulk of the collection consists of early twentieth century images of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan, although there are several folders of photographs Swain made while traveling abroad with Professor Francis W. Kelsey as photographic technician for the University of Michigan's Near East Research Center. These latter images form part of the Miscellaneous Papers Series and are frequently accompanied by lengthy captions and/or typewritten text. Also included in this series is a volume of letters Swain wrote to his family while traveling abroad in 1924; essays and reports related to a 1925 expedition; a diary of camping trips on the Au Sable River, 1904-1908; a diary jointly kept by George and Edith Swain, 1900; a University of Michigan English composition student notebook; and a small folder of genealogical material. There are two sets of photographs -- Set One, which relates to a carefully prepared index Swain maintained and Set Two, which has no index. The Photographs: Prints series holds approximately two feet of mainly Ann Arbor and University of Michigan area realted images -- campus buildings, portraits, landscapes, cityscapes -- most of which are part of Set One. Many of these prints are photographs presumably printed by Swain; others, however, are black and white copy prints prepared for reference purposes. The Photographs: Negatives series forms the bulk of the collection and includes over six hundred glass plate negatives of various sizes, as well as film negatives, also of varying sizes.

Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Additional inventory work was undertaken in 1997-1998 for risk management purposed, but generated little new information.
