Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Additional inventory work was undertaken in 1997-1998 for risk management purposed, but generated little new information. Leopold, Aldo, 1886-1948

Leopold was born in Burlington, Iowa and received a Master of Forestry degree from Yale University. In 1909 he joined the U.S. Forest Service and from 1914-1924 he supervised national forests in Arizona and New Mexico. He established the first wilderness area in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico and was a founder of The Wilderness Society. In 1933, he accepted the chair of Game Management at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he taught until his death on April 21, 1948....

Pinchot, Gifford, 1865-1946

First director, United States Forest Service (1905). He changed the name of protected "forest preserves" to "national forests" and advocated a controversial "wise use" policy for the resources of the national forests, whereby a greater use of forest resources, such as tree harvests and grazing rights could be permitted.
