Design for Welgelegen, ca. 1780.

ArchivalResource

Design for Welgelegen, ca. 1780.

Front elevation of Henry Hope's house, Welgelegen, near Amsterdam. Ink and watercolor on a page decorated in trompe l'oeil to appear as an old, torn drawing lying on a neutral ground. Pencil changes (omitting a pedestal over a wing and substituting sculptural groups, the arrangement that was executed) indicate that this is probably a presentation drawing by the original designer. The paper has an 18th century Dutch watermark.
