Cherokee Nation documents relating to the proposed purchase of Cherokee Nation bonds by Edwin D. Chadick : Tahlequah, Indian Territory, 1893 Dec 13-1894 Jan 18.

Copies of typed documents including a letter containing the proposal by Edwin D. Chadick to purchase Cherokee Nation bonds (1893 Dec 13); the Cherokee National Council joint resolution accepting the proposal which was passed December 18 by the Senate, concurred in by the Council December 19, and approved by Principal Chief C. J. Harris on December 19, 1893; telegrams to Harris from Chadick and the St. Louis National Bank regarding a good faith deposit (December 25-30, 1893); a letter from Dixon and Smith, Attorneys and Counsellors at Law with which the deposit check was submitted to Harris (December 28, 1893); and a notarized Cherokee Nation Executive Department statement regarding the deposit check (January 2, 1894). Also included are copies of a Cherokee National Council joint resolution making the contract null and void due to contractual noncompliance by Chadick (January 1 and 2, 1894), and a signed statement by John L. Adair, executive secretary of the Cherokee Nation, certifying that the copies are true and correct copies of the record in the archives of the Cherokee Nation (January 18, 1894).

Although the Treaty of Hopewell (1785) defined the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation and the U.S., Congress during the Confederation period was unable to keep white squatters off Cherokee lands.
