A member of the Princeton Class of 1939, Wainwright was an avid bookman and collector. He had a lengthy career at the Princeton University Library, retiring in 1982 as assistant university librarian for collection development. He continued working part-time for the rest of his life in the Dept. of Rare Books and Special Collections as curator of the Morris L. Parrish Collection of Victorian Novelists. Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years.
