The series consists of black and white photographs of the grounds and buildings at Randalls Island, along with some images of inmates at work or recreation. Some of the photographs carry typescript labels, a few have manuscript notations on the verso. Very few of the photographs are dated. The photographs are of various sizes ranging from 3 x 5 inches to 8 x 10 inches. Images show roadways, interior and exterior views of buildings, inmate formations (regimental parades and bands), small group portraits (baseball team, silver cup winners), inmates at work (field work or on fire drills), and at recreation (minstrel show).
