Autobiography, vol. I, 1966.

The autobiography spans the years 1896-1933 and covers Ricker's family background; the family's interest in education and associations with Reynold College; Ricker's own early education and science interests; the inauguration of Rice Institute (later Rice University) and his own enrollment there in 1912; his undergraduate and graduate studies at Rice, his teachers, courses, and Ph.D. in physics in 1920 (as the first physics Ph.D. at Rice). Ricker also discusses his reasons for joining industry and his employment at Western Electric Company in New York in 1921, where he invented the paper cone loudspeaker, and his return to Texas in 1923. The greater part of the autobiography deals with Ricker's work and inventions in the oil industry between the years 1924-1933: prospecting of oil deposits seismographically for the Humble Oil Company where he created a geophysical department, and later electrically for General Exploration Company (1927-1928). The last part of the manuscript deals with oil production, inventions and construction of oil field equipment and documents his association with the Hughes Tool Company (1928-1933) where he developed the plunger lift with Harold Fletcher, and describes the installation of the simplified single string pneumatic swab for Gulf Refining Company in 1931. The autobiography includes photographs and copies of patents.
