Georges Turpin journals and letters, 1914-1952.

Georges Turpin's unpublished ongoing manuscript journal for the years 1914-1952 is supplemented with ca. 240 letters received from artists and other colleagues, ca. 1930-1952. Also included are six manuscripts of critical studies and eulogies. The years 1914-1932 of the journal are loose leaf while the years 1934-1952 are bound in 19 volumes. The year 1933 is not included. Turpin's journal brings the artistic and literary world of early and mid-century Paris back to life. On Mondays and then later on Sundays Turpin received his artist friends at his home to discuss art and politics. He frequently visited the studios of artists. The journal offers detailed descriptions of these conversations and visits. Turpin recorded the particulars of the art world: how much a painting brought at auction, how the winner of a prize was chosen, or who were the members of a certain committee. Finally, he presents vivid descriptions of the experience of World War II and the German occupation. The letters, from some 50 correspondents, mostly artists, concern reviews, critics, exhibitions, and sales. They often contain musings on artistic theory and practice. Correspondents include Frantisek Kupka, Kees van Dongen, Raymond Renefer, Maurice Barbey, Lucien Levy-Dhurmer, Georges d'Edpagnat, Pierre Girieud, Léon Duval-Gozlan, Jacques Villon, Camille Mauclair, Pierre Montezin, Georges Lecomte, and Jean Peské.
