Oral history interview with Joseph Grew English, 1991 February 12, 14, and 27.

Joseph English joined the staff of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. as deputy administrator in 1970. He served as administrator from 1971 until his retirement in 1986. English described the administrator's duties ranging from security to parking and recalled complex arrangements required for special exhibitions and visiting dignitaries. He described his associates and commented on the personalities and situations he encountered as administrator. He recounted numerous anecdotes concerning the National Gallery, the work of the administrator and events during his tenure.
