Letter Innsbruck,to a cardinal, describing how he was taken prisoner in Cremona, 1702.

The Maréchal de France Villeroi writes to an unnamed cardinal from his captivity in Innsbruck, offering his response to the rumors circulating at court about the unfortunate events of Cremona on the night of January 31. That evening an Italian priest had opened the gate to the enemy. Villeroi was taken prisoner in the battle and handed to Count Guido de Starhemberg. Prince Eugene and Prince de Commercy came to see him: "Je reçus d'eux toutte sorte d'honnestetez," says Villeroy, but Prince Eugene refused his request to be sent to Venice "en luy donnant ma parole;...c'aurait esté une prison bien douce que de la passer auprez de V.Em." This mention suggests that his correspondent was Cardinal César d'Estrées, at that time on a diplomatic mission at the courts of Mantua and Venice. The letter is signed "Villeroy."
