Ernest William Winkler bibliographical notes, 1902-1934.

Collection of two printed volumes, holograph notes, correspondence, and newspaper clippings relating to southern newspapers. Gertrude S. Gilmer's "Checklist of Southern Periodicals to 1861" (Boston, 1934) is heavily annotated with notes about additional periodicals tipped and laid in, and includes a letter from Gertrude Gilman. A "Check List of American Newspapers in the Library of Congress" (Washington, 1901) contains letters from librarians, a typescript check list of newspapers at the Texas State Library, holograph notes, and newspaper clippings laid in. Accompanied by a holograph "Texas Newspapers 1819-1860," other manuscript notes, and "A List of American Newspaper Reprints" compiled by Joseph Gavit (New York, 1931).

Ernest William Winkler (1875-1960) was a librarian and bibliographer. He was state librarian of Texas in 1906, and from 1909 to 1915. He became librarian of the University of Texas in 1923. He compiled and edited the Check List of Texas Imprints .
