American toy village [toy]. [ca. 1875]

Milton Bradley "started business in 1860 [and] turned to games primarily to keep busy the lithograph press he had purchased". The company was established in Springfield, Massachusetts, and manufactured games, trains, paints and crayons, guns, optical toys, puzzles and many other items including building blocks and model houses. (Cf. I. and M. McClintock. Toys in America. Washington, D.C., 1961). It was the first to market in the U.S. the kindergarten "gifts" of Friedrich Froebel, never, apparently, produced commercially in Germany. The company is still active in the manufacture of toys and to-day is a division of Hasbro, Inc.

Milton Bardley began making toys in 1860. He developed the idea for the Myriopticon around 1866 after viewing a German toy with moving parts. For this toy, Bradley drew the pictures and wrote the scripts himself. The myriopticon is considered the first item to capture the home viewing audience with a moving picture.
