Cornelius Van Schaak Roosevelt became interested in the graphic work of Dutch artist M.C. Escher in the mid-1950s and eventually acquired a major collection of Escher's work, which he donated to the National Gallery of Art. Roosevelt's interest in Escher led him to correspond with the artist, and, after Escher's death, with members of the artist's family. This correspondence is the nucleus of Roosevelt's collection of papers relating to M.C. Escher. In addition, Roosevelt collected copies of correspondence between the artist and other individuals as a research resource and also conducted extensive correspondence with other individuals and organizations concerning the artist and his work. Beginning in 1966, at the artist's request, Roosevelt represented Escher in negotiations with United States publishers who wished to use the artist's graphic work. Roosevelt saved representative examples of correspondence associated with this activity.
