Summary: Personal correspondence, business records, and photographs relating to the Douglas family and the aviation businesses of Walter Douglas, Jr., mostly dating from 1938 to 1959. There are business ledgers, accounts, and correspondence of Walter Douglas, Sr. regarding business activities in Mexico from 1896 to 1948. There is also a small amount of material about Walter Douglas, Jr.'s other activities : the Gilpin Sports Stadium and Cox Mobile Home Estates park, both in Tucson. Most of the collection contains correspondence, instruction materials, student records, financial accounts, daily operations records, applications for routes, and other documents relating to the Gilpin Airport, the Civilian Pilot Training Program, the Veteran Affairs Aviation Training Program, Grand Canyon Airlines, and Gilpin and Grand Canyon Airlines between 1936 and 1959. Correspondence with the Dept. of Commerce, Civil Aeronautics Administration, Office of Civil Defense (f. 306) includes Civil Air patrol flight logs. Correspondence with aviation historians includes information about airline histories. Correspondents include Rep. John R. Murdock, Sen. Henry Ashurst and Sen. Carl Hayden. Correspondence with Ashurst includes letters with the National Youth Administration about their training programs. There are also photographs of the Walter Douglas family, one class of the Civilian Pilot Training Program, and fishing trips to Guaymas, Mexico. Photographs of Gilpin Airport, Grand Canyon Airlines, an airplane crash (not in the canyon), and aerial views of the Grand Canyon (ca. 1940s), Nogales, Sasabe, and Lukeville (ca. 1985). One photograph of the Gilpin Airport interior shows a U.S. war propaganda poster on the wall stating "The Enemy is Listening."

Walter Douglas was involved in the mining and railroad industries of Arizona throughout his life. From 1895 to 1899, he worked for the Detroit Copper Company. In 1899, he became superintendent of the Copper Queen Consolidated Company at Bisbee, then served as general manager from 1902 to 1910, and then was general manager for Phelps Dodge.
