The papers consist of a typescript for Sir Lewis Lloyd Michell's unpublished autobiography, "Half a Century in and out of Africa, 1864-1919." The papers also include copies of selected correspondence of Cecil Rhodes and Michell's diary, 1897-1898, 1902, most of which concerns a trip to Rhodesia.

Sir Lewis Michell was born in Plymouth, England in 1842. In 1863 he joined the London and South African Bank and went to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. For the next forty years Michell played an important role in South African financial and economic development. He was also the author of a biography of Cecil John Rhodes. Michell died in 1928.
