Charles Irish Walker was born April 25, 1814 in New York (State). Educated in common school, he started life as a teacher, clerk, and merchant. He moved to Grand Rapids (Mich.) to buy land in 1836. In 1837 he became editor of the Grand River Times (newspaper). In Vermont, Walker studied law and was admitted to the Vermont bar in 1842.
