Correspondence, 1830-1849.

This collection consists of 80 letters, the majority of which are between John Smith and his sons John M. Smith and Samuel Mountjoy Smith. The letters largely pertain to buying and selling paintings, difficulties with purchasers, business trips in England and Europe, and family matters, and discuss the purchase of paintings by Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and Ruysdael. One letter mentions the death of Constable (1837); and several letters refer to prominent figures such as the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, the governor-general of Canada Sir Charles Bagot, the Dutch picture dealers Van der Hoop and Christianus Johannus Nieuwenhuys, and the British picture dealer Chaplin. Other correspondents include Henry Ellis of the British Museum (1833), the picture dealer J. Emmerson (1835), Robert Hume (1837), and Isaac Paley, who writes of his inability to find subscribers for John Smith's Catalogue raisonneĢ (1830). The collection also contains a parish record of the marriage between Samuel Mountjoy Smith and Mary Anne Bates, daughter of the auctioneer William Bates (1837).

80 letters, 1 marriage certificate.
