Ann Ronell (1903-1993) composer and lyricist, was born Anne Rosenblatt in Omaha, Nebraska. She transferred from Wheaton College to Radcliffe College and graduated in 1927. In 1935 she married Lester Cowan, an independent film producer. Encouraged by Irving Berlin and George Gershwin, Ronell wrote the words and music of popular songs including, "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?", "Willow Weep for Me," and "Whistle While You Work." As a result of the success of his Broadway musical Lady in the dark in 1941, German-born composer Kurt Weill and his wife, the singing actress Lotte Lenya, were able to buy "Brook House," in Rockland County, New York, moving there during their sixth year in the United States.
