Correspondence, writings and notes, sketches and sketchbooks, photographs, sound and video recordings, business and financial records, printed material, and subject files. Included are: biographical sketches and resumes; passports; correspondence, 1965-1989, with museums and galleries, including Middendorf-Lane (Washington, D.C.), Fendrick (Washington, D.C), Hamilton (N.Y.C.), Cark Solway (Cincinnati), and Robert L. Kidd Associates (Birmingham, Mich.); letters from collector Donald A. Brown, and artists Steve Frietch, Keith Morrison, Martin Puryear, David Driskell, and others; 3 sketchbooks with notes, undated and 1971-1972; sketches; floor plans of exhibition spaces; photographs of Gilliam and his studio, family, and works of art; notes and writings by and about Gilliam; A daily record of his activities kept by secretaries, 1974-1979; 2 videotapes, "Carlsten Art Gallery," 1980 and "Project in Black," 1982; sound recordings, including "Portrait of Sam Gilliam," undated, and "Sam and Rockne," 1965, "Leah's Class with Sam," 1973, and "Sam Gilliam, Benny Andrews," 1973; 3 interview transcripts; printed material, 1963-1986, including exhibition catalogs, announcements, and clippings on Gilliam, Rockne Krebs, Ed McGowin and others; a scrapbook (disassembled), 1958-1966, containing photographs and printed material; financial records, 1966-1989, including 3 ledgers, 1974-1976, tax records, 1975-1981, and contracts; and miscellany. Also included are subject files (2 ft.), 1968-1986, containing letters, photographs, business records, sketches and printed material on galleries, commissions, organizations, workshops, teaching positions, art suppliers and other topics.
