Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Entered the Civil War as a Captain in the 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. He then served as a Assistant Commissary of Musters of the staff of Brigadier General William W. Averell. His administrative skills then brought him to a staff position in the War Department in Washington DC, where he served as an Assistant Adjutant General, then as an Assistant Inspector General in the Cavalry Bureau.
