Ernst Hochfeld papers, 1912-1981.

Architectural drawings, plans, photographs, correspondence, publications, clippings, and other personal effects relating to the career of architect Ernst Hochfeld in Hamburg, prior to his emigration in 1938. The papers include documentation of Hochfeld's work as Block and Hochfeld principal, as well as his collaborative efforts with the office of Karl Schneider. The architectural drawings and blueprints document a variety of projects including the commercial commission Deutschlandhaus, the cultural center Hamburger Kammerspiele, the Jewish Community Center, the Wandsbek apartment buildings project, single-family residences, as well as furniture design. The collection also includes a group of drawings by Hochfeld's peer Caspar Johann Ehmcke.

German architect who was born in Mainz, Germany and received his architectural training under Lussow and Kuehne (Dresden, 1911-1912), Walter Gropius (Berlin, 1912-1914), and Peter Behrens (Berlin, 1915-1916). He established his own office in Hamburg in 1923, designing houses, housing projects, factories, theaters, and "unit" furniture.
