Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991) was a Hungarian-born composer. He studied and performed throughout Europe until 1933, when he and violinist Adolf Busch and family left Germany for Switzerland (Serkin was later to marry Busch's daughter, Irene). In 1939 they emigrated to the United States, where Serkin taught at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and was later (1968-1976) its Director. Leroy J. Robertson was born in Fountain Green, Utah, on 21 December 1896, the son of Utah-born Mormon parents. His first musical experiences were simple and personal--he fashioned tunes on a homemade fiddle and played by ear on the parlor organ in his home.
