Papers of Daniel Alexander Payne Murray, 1881-1966 (bulk 1895-1930).

Correspondence, drafts of writings, and research materials relating principally to Murray's unpublished Historical and Biographical Encyclopedia of the Colored Race. Includes research notes, drafts of biographical sketches, annotated clippings and reviews, photographs, bibliographies, and material relating to Murray's attempts to publish his encyclopedia. Also included is material relating to his civic and social activities in Washington, D.C., his work as assistant to Ainsworth R. Spofford at the Library of Congress, the Republican Party, and Murray family material, including papers of Murray's wife Anna Jane (Evans) Murray.

Ainsworth Rand Spofford (September 12, 1825 – August 11, 1908) was an American journalist and the sixth Librarian of Congress. Spofford was born in Gilmanton, New Hampshire.
