Cowan, 1919-1974, a physicist and educator, took his doctorate at Washington University in St. Louis in 1949. From 1949 to 1957 he was a physicist at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, where he became a group leader in the nuclear weapons test division. He joined the physics faculty at the Catholic University of American (CUA) as an ordinary professor in 1958. A co-discoverer of the neutrino in 1956, he was a poineer in the technique of particle detection used in elementary particle physics, ...
