Notebook. ca. 1900-1905.

Manuscript workbook contains instructions for making a variety of lace: diamond lace, Grandma's lace, oak leaf lace, handsome knit lace, German lace, strawberry lace, etc. Twelve of the written directions are accompanied by actual samples pinned or sewn into the volume. Manuscript is similar to others of the late Victorian period kept by women who were learning how to knit, crochet, sew, and make lace. As such, it demonstrates a consistency between what Shakers were doing in their communities and the activities of the outside world. In addition, the volume provides evidence that the Shakers were affected by the ornamentation of Victorian times.
