Henry Beville joined the staff of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., as a photographer before its opening in 1941 and remained in this position until his retirement in 1975. Beville recalled his photographic training in the navy and his experiences photographing the National Gallery's art works and loans for special exhibitions. He described travel to Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, where important Gallery paintings were stored during World War II, and conditions there. He recalled experiences photographing the Kress collection in New York and challenges of documenting art conservation activities.
