Oral history interview with Lina Steele 1996 November 20.

Lina Steele became a museum aide at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in 1961. Thereafter she worked briefly in the sales shop and the education department before joining the department responsible for the Index of American Design, where she served until her retirement in 1984. Steele described the work of the Index office, in particular the exhibitions that were available for loan to other museums. She recalled organizing and mounting exhibitions of Index renderings and working with researchers who used the Index. She described two special projects that relied heavily on Index resources--a two-volume publication on American design and a microfiche catalog to the Index collection.
