A manuscript copy (made for Reverend Garland by "Mr. Ireland") of Garland's account of his trip through France. The trip began in Havre de Grace and continued through Paris, Lyons, Montpellier, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Poitiers, Orleans, Versailles, Paris, Amiens, Abbeville, and Calais. During the first stop to Paris, Rev. Garland recounts seeing "Tristram Shandy" (Laurence Sterne) in the Church of St. Roche [i.e. St. Roch]. The volume also includes manuscript notes on the inside cover in another hand, as well as additional loose notes attesting to the date of the volume.

Lewis Perry Curtis was born in Southport, Connecticut on November 30, 1900. He graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1923; Ph.D. 1926) and joined the Yale faculty in 1927. Curtis was a prominent member of the faculty until 1969, teaching in the English and History Departments. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Division of History-Arts and Letters, and served as its director from 1956-1961.
