Papers, 1929-1972 1934-1945.

The collection consists of .75 cubic feet of correspondence, memoranda and other papers of meteorologist Jorgen Holmboe. The accession includes material documenting his work as an assistant to Vilhelm Bjerknes in Bergen, Norway, his participation as meteorologist on the Lincoln Ellsworth Antarctic Expeditions of 1934-1936, his work as a member of the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1936-1940, and his work as a faculty member at the University of California, Los Angeles beginning in 1940. The collection also documents the Holmboe family in Norway and the United States. The collection consists largely of letters exchanged by Holmboe and his wife, Kirsten Bendixen Holmboe. Most are in Norwegian. Also included are a few letters exchanged with his Bergen colleagues including Tor Bergeron, Theodor Hesselberg, Sverre Petterssen, and Harald Sverdrup. Letters from Lincoln Ellsworth, F. Spiess and Sir George Hubert Winkins refer to the Lincoln Ellsworth Antarctic Expeditions. Letters exchanged with meteorologists in Wellington, New Zealand, including M.A.F. Barnett and Edward Kidson, discuss Holmboe's visit there during the Lincoln Ellsworth Antarctic Expedition and plans for visits by New Zealand meteorologists to the Polar Front group at Bergen. The collection includes only a few items documenting Holmboe's career at UCLA.

At that time, all regular MIT students were required to take “general studies” classes from the Course in Science and Literature, in addition to English, history, and modern languages.
