French independent Salon, founded in 1889 by a group of artists including Meissonier, Puvis de Chavannes, Carolus-Duran (its first three presidents), Carriere, Rodin and Roll, in protest against the system of awards and jury selection at the official Salon. On November 11, 1862, a group of prominent Buffalo citizens met to adopt a constitution and by-laws for the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy.
