Dr. Niederland was concerned with the origins of creativity in famous individuals. He concentrated on studying the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, his life and career, from a psychoanalytic point of view. His studies resulted in a number of papers and publications including: "An Analytic Inquiry into the Life of Heinrich Schliemann" (N.Y., 1965); "Psychoanalytic Profile of a Creative Mind..." (Basel, 1965); and "Trauma und Kreativitaet" (Frankfurt, 1989.) The collection includes: Facsimiles of letters by Schliemann to his father (1869-1871) (now at the Morgan Library); photographs and photocopies of letters, 1869-1875, some discussing and reporting on excavations at Troy; published letters, extracts from Schliemann's diary (1866-1886); and notes of interviews with Schliemann's daughter (ca. 1961-1962); notes, manuscripts, and typescripts (some corrected) of Niederland's writings (including lectures) on Schliemann; correspondence, ca. 1961-1979, mostly relating to his work on Schliemann, commenting on his writings and research, in application for grants to fund research, and discussing creativity with fellow psychiatrists John Kirtland Wright, Barbara Tuchman, Ernst Meyer, Mina Curtiss, and others; and miscellaneous reading notes, articles, and researches, including psychoanalytic studies of figures such as Joseph Conrad and research and writings in this vein by others, especially Henry Krystal's "Giorgio de Chirico: A Study of the Reflection of Ego States in Artistic production," 1961.
