Survey notebooks, 1874-[199-].

Pursuant to MGLA c 34, s 2; c 42, s 2; and c 82, ss 1, 11, county commissioners are responsible for laying out, altering, and discontinuing county highways, maintaining county maps, locating and altering railroad crossings, establishing witness marks for town boundaries, and until 1975, overseeing and inspecting canals, county mill dams, and mill ponds. Survey notebooks are created by the county engineers or by contract engineers and surveyors hired by the county commissioners.
