Papers, ca. 1877-1934.

Papers of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema and family. Collection consists primarily of letters of Alma-Tadema, with a few sketches, photographs and some printed ephemera. With several letters of his immediate family, including his second wife, Laura. Alma-Tadema's letters are to various correspondents; they concern his paintings, with mention of specific works either in progress or submitted for exhibition. Letters also concern his work schedule and studio; honors conferred upon him, and his membership in art associations; his family, social engagements and other matters. Occasional commentary is provided on Roman emperors, classical antiquities, and the contemporary art scene. Some mention is made of fellow painters, including Edward Burne-Jones, Felix Moscheles, Hubert Vos, and Alma-Tadema's god-son, Hermann Ebers. Several of the letters are written in French or German; a few include translations.

Hubert Vos (born February 15, 1855, Maastricht, Netherlands-died in New York City in 1935), Dutch painter who was born Josephus Hubertus Vos in Maastricht. He studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and with Fernand Cormon in Paris. He exhibited widely in Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dresden and Munich. From 1885 to 1892, he worked in England, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1888 and 1891. He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists....
