The series consists of a dozen black and white photographs of service medals and a few brief textual summaries on marksmanship badges, describing their significance and history. The summaries were apparently copies from published Adjutant General's reports or other unidentified sources. The photographs may date from the 1940s and 1950s. The purpose for which the material was gathered is not known, but may pertain to captioning exhibit material or otherwise researching military accoutrements, perhaps for annual reports or other publications.

It is unclear exactly how these volumes came into the State's possession. They may have been forwarded to the Adjutant General who in turn transferred them to the State Library; the State Library then transferred the volumes to the State Archives in the spring of 1978. A second possibility is that the volumes could have been donated to the Bureau of Military Statistics. In 1911 and 1912 the Adjutant General's Office transferred a large number of items collected by the bureau to the State Library...
