Diary of a visit to Salt Lake City and travel to Chicago, 1868 Nov 5-Dec 2.

Bound holograph diary documenting a visit to Salt Lake City from 1868 November 5-9, travel by stage and railroad from Salt Lake to Chicago 1868 November 10-18, and a stay in Chicago through December 2. The first fifty-four pages of the diary contain notes from interviews with Mormons, J. H. Beadle and other non-Mormons, and Coffin's personal observations on Mormonism and poloygamy, including a description of Brigham Young and members of his family attending a theatrical performance. Coffin notes in the entry of November 20 that he wrote an article on Mormonism for the Boston Journal on that day. Entries made during his trip to Chicago and his stay there include comments on distances travelled, scenery, individuals that he met and visited, and other social activities.
