The Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank records document its activities from its founding in 1807 through its 1918 consolidation with the Philadelphia National Bank. Included are shareholder and dividend records as well as general ledgers describing individual accounts. Historical files contain material that was assembled for the bank's centennial. Consolidation files document the merger with PNB.

The Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank of Philadelphia was formed in 1807. According to its 1809 charter the purpose of the bank was to "serve the community" and the majority of stockholders and directors were either farmers, mechanics, or manufacturers. It played a critical role in financing the state's internal improvements system.
