A detailed account, by Karl Herzfeld, describing several generations of his family (beginning with his grandfather). Herzfeld also describes his experiences as a soldier in World War I (in an Austrian artillery regiment), his research in theoretical physics and physical chemistry at the Universität München (1920-1926), and his positions at Johns Hopkins University (1926-1936) and the Catholic University of America (from 1937).
