Autograph manuscript of an untitled magazine article, with revisions, written by George William Baird, summarizing the life and character of Wyllys Lyman. Baird lists Lyman's military promotions and briefly describes his family background and events of his career. Included is a brief account of Lyman's defense of a supply train destined for General Nelson Appleton in northern Texas during the Red River War. Lyman defended the supplies against attack by Comanche Indians on the Upper Washita River, Sep 9-11, 1874.

Born in Milford, Connecticut in 1839, Baird attended Yale College until his junior year when he enlisted in the First Connecticut Light Battery in 1862. He served in the Civil War in South Carolina and Florida, and in March 1864, he was promoted to colonel and assigned to the command of the 32nd Regiment of U. S. Colored Troops.
