These photographs document the 270 works of medieval and Renaissance art that remained in the collection of the New York art dealer Ernest Brummer at his death. The collection was acquired by the Duke University Museum of Art in 1966. Most heavily represented are Romanesque and Gothic stone and wood sculpture from France, Germany and the Netherlands; and Italian stone, marble, and bronze sculpture from the Renaissance to the 18th century. Works depicted include major sculptures from Vezelay, Chartres (choir screen), Mantes, and Paris. The collection also contains photographs of Gothic ivories, English medieval alabasters, decorative arts, stained glass, and church furniture. Many of the objects have been rephotographed after recent cleaning and restoration. The photographs are documented by photocopies of the dealer's stock cards.
