Sidney Walter Martin was born in Tifton, Georgia on February 1, 1911. Martin was educated at Furman University (A. B., 1932), the University of Georgia (M. A., 1935), and the University of North Carolina (Ph. D. in History, 1942). Following two years of employment at Furman University (1930-1932) and three years as a high school teacher in Palatka, Florida (1932-1935), Martin joined the faculty of the University of Georgia in 1935.
