Quincy Adams Brooks papers, 1855-1889.

Five letters from Brooks to his wife (1855-1865); copies of abstracts of accounts for the Oregon and Washington Superintendency, U.S. Office of Indian Affairs; and detailed reports, orders, and letters written by officers of the 1st Brigade, Oregon Militia, during the Modoc Indian War, 1872-1873, including battle plans and lists of killed and wounded and describing actions and behavior of the men in battle. A typescript of the Modoc War materials is included.

Quincy Adams Brooks crossed the Plains in 1851 to Olympia, Oregon Territory. A lawyer by training, he became the first prosecuting attorney north of the Columbia River. He also served as secretary to the Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Washington Territory and Oregon, 1856-1860 and assistant quartermaster general of the Oregon State Militia during the Modoc War, 1872-1873.
