Drawings and sketchbooks of Susanne Suba, ca.1917-circa 1930.

A collection of about 75 examples of Susanne Suba's childhood artwork. Although mostly undated, a number of pieces do bear dates, ranging from1918 to 1930, and thus her maturation as an artist can clearly be followed. Some of the pieces were for a class and were graded. An interesting set illustrates her autobiography, beginning with birth and going through her arrival in New York. One drawing depicts her father at work, supervising the painting of a large structure. Popular subjects are fashionably dressed women, children at play or school, the circus, and African Americans. As well, there are landscapes and floral drawings. Several of Susan's early drawings were done on the backs of pieces of paper with more accomplished drawings on them, perhaps sketches executed by her father. Two sketchbooks are in the collection, as well as two home-made books, one an "issue" of McCall's Magazine.
