Diary. 1865-1867.

Entries record daily activities of what was probably a typical Shaker life. Entries from Jan.-March 1865 mention "working in the shop," with both sewing and painting mentioned. In the spaces for early April 1865 are listed patterns, apparently for weaving. The rest of the diary mentions visits made by Shakers to various communities; berry picking; sewing; learning to make bonnets and use the new sewing machine; making a mattress, swifts, and straw mats; fixing chimneys on the meeting house; and other assorted details of life in the Shaker village. On Nov. 7, several Shakers go to see the Indian basket makers. Thanksgiving and a fast day were observed in December. In 1867, the diary keeper continues to make swifts, mats, sew, braids straw trimming, and make fans, including a peacock fan. She also mentions washing and other sundry chores. On June 2, a "great rabble, 400 carriages & 1600 people" attend the Shakers' meeting. On August 19 and Nov. 11, she lines coffins. As usual, she notes visits to and from other Shakers, reports on the weather, notes deaths, and gives some information about other things going on in the community.

The diarist was an unidentified seamstress at the Hancock, Massachusetts, Shaker community, though the handwriting for entries from January-April 3, 1865 does not match that for the rest of 1865, 1866, or 1867, suggesting that at least two people were responsible for some of the entries.
