William H. Jones was Post Master at New Haven, Connecticut, from 1814-1842, and this collection of his papers reflect that career. The bulk of the collection consists of quarterly Post Office reports, 1814-1842, assorted reports and papers, receipts, bills, and drafts. His business correspondence, 1843-1857, addresses post office business and various lotteries and includes mention of his appointment as postmaster and letters to President Tyler regarding Jones' removal from the post. The certificate appointing him deputy postmaster is with the correspondence.. Another significant portion of papers relates to his activities with the Masonic Grand Council in New Haven. Assorted bills and receipts need additional sorting but they include tuition bills for his children and seem to indicate he was involved in other business enterprises as well, including a public house and hotel and a hardware business.
