Correspondence and papers. The collection contains correspondence and papers dealing chiefly with his terms as territorial treasurer and governor. Included is a small amount of material on the anti-Chinese matter and the Charcoal Burners' War. A considerable amount of correspondence is contained with Rollin M Daggett, William Sharon and Thomas Wren. Other correspondents include George G. Lyon, Arthur L. Thomas, W.W. Ross, H.C. Marshall, John P. Jones, William A. Wheeler, David M. Key,A.A. Sargeant, Carl Schurz, R.C. McCormick, William Irwin, S.V. Benet, William M. Eavarts, Rutherford B. Hayes, John W. Mackay, and Richard Rising.

A native of Somerset County Pennsylvania, John Kinkead was born on December 10, 1826. He came to Carson City on 1859 to establish a branch of his father-in-law's mercantile firm. He served as territorial treasurer in Nevada before becoming Nevada's third governor. In 1884 He was appointed governor of Alaska Territory.
