Walter Yonge, diarist, born ca. 1581, was the second son and heir of John Yonge of Colyton, Devonshire, and his wife Alice Starre or Stere. He matriculated from Magdalen College, Oxford, on April 19, 1599, but left the university without a degree, and in 1600 was admitted to the Middle Temple. Yonge took an active part in local affairs and, in 1640, was elected a member of Parliament for Honiton. An inveterate diarist, he kept a journal from 1604-1645. The South Sea Company was founded in 1711 to trade with Spanish America, on the assumption that the War of the Spanish Succession would end with a treaty permitting such trade.
